The name Whitney means
“White Island”. White is a symbol for purity, free from corrupt desire and
anything artificial. It also means to be sincere, genuine and have a
singleness of heart. A word picture of the name Whitney would be a single
island in the middle of a wild and tumultuous ocean. This island would
have a bright light from above shinning down upon it, lighting it up so
those out in the stormy sea can see the island like a beacon. The waves
wash over the island washing it clean, over and over, and the island
nevertheless stays put.
At the base of every island,
no matter how large or small, there is a common stratum or floor from
which all islands spring. This can be likened to Christ our Rock on which
we are to stand. Whitney then is a person who stands upon her Rock, being
washed and grounded in Him Who causes her to be able to stand, stay true
and steady when her all around her may be rough and rocky.
Whitney is to be a place of
refuge; remote from the hustle and bustle of the every day life and its’
demands. She can be a place where her secular friends can come to get a
cool glass of water when the way gets hot and dusty or even some rest in
the shade when they are weary. And the same can be said of her Christian
friends as well for Whitney often finds herself sitting down with a cup of
coffee and listening to the troubles and woes of friends who seek her out
for just this sort of thing.. Not that she necessarily always has a word
of wisdom for them. For the most part Whitney listens and offers
comforting words and a shoulder upon which her friends find comfort. Of
course the Lord does give Whitney good counsel for her friends when
needed.
Whitney may or may not be a
quiet and introspective person, although her inner man is quiet and
attentive when she is alone with the Lord, drawing on His strength. She
has to do this in order for her to be able to stand the winds and waves of
life’s storms. When her friends see how she withstands the assaults that
naturally come with life and resists the temptations that invariable come
her way they want to not only be with her but they want to be like her as
well. This is the model Jesus set for us to imitate and Whitney does it
well.
Jeremiah 9:24
. . . let the boaster boast about this:
that he understands and knows me - that I am ADONAI, practicing grace,
justice and righteousness in the land; for in these things I take
pleasure," says ADONAI.
